McKenzie River: The first 25 photos are from a 2.5-mile loop trail that goes around both sides of Sahalie Falls and Koosah Falls, just off Oregon 126. I highly recommend this easy hike to anyone passing through the area.

Cone Peak/Iron Mountain: The rest of the photos are from a 6-mile loop trail, which starts at Tombstone Pass (4240') on U.S. Highway 20. The wildflower meadows below Cone Peak are some of the best I've seen anywhere, and definitely worth the drive in late June or July. From the saddle between the two peaks, I decided it might be fun to scramble up 600 feet to the top of Cone Peak (5646'), and I found a rough trail through the woods. Then the trail petered out and I was pretty much on my own until the summit; it was very steep and I wouldn't have even tried it without trekking poles. From atop Cone Peak, I could see every volcano from Mount Hood down to Diamond Peak, and to the west I could also see the higher peaks of the Coast Range. (The plan was to go up to the lookout on Iron Mountain as well, but June 26 was the hottest day of the year so far in Oregon; even at 5000', the temperature in was in the mid to upper 80s with blazing sunshine and not much shade, so we didn't go all the way up.)
